Child maintenance dodgers may struggle to get credit
Parents who try to avoid paying care costs for their children could be refused personal loans, asserts the government.
According to a new bill, banks and other financial service providers could be informed about Britons who have not paid child maintenance and could therefore refuse to give them personal loans or other forms of credit.
The Guardian reports that the government is proposing to allow child support officials to contact credit reference bodies with details of individuals trying to avoid financial responsibility as a parent.
“A small number seem to think paying for their kids is something they can simply choose not to do. It isn’t,” warns work and pensions secretary John Hutton.
In related news, a recent poll from Alliance & Leicester revealed that 40 per cent of people between the ages of 35 and 44 say personal loans are their preferred method of borrowing.
