Tourists Advised To Consider Cover While Abroad

Tourists Advised To Consider Cover While AbroadWhile the prospect of doing high-octane adventure activities while on holiday may appeal to tourists, should they have an accident it may be important to ensure they do not end up damaging more than just their body.

Such is the claim of esure Travel Insurance, which reveals that significant numbers of Britons are looking to take part in adventurous sports and activities while on holiday. According to the firm, off-road mountain biking is the most popular adventure activity for UK holidaymakers - accounting for 13 per cent of respondents’ votes. Meanwhile, canoeing, scuba diving, jet skiing and sailing were also shown to be sought-after pursuits. In addition, it was reported that 25 per cent of tourists pick a holiday resort or destination depending on the availability of such activities. Overall, 88 per cent of British tourists were shown to have taken part in these kind of past-times while abroad.

However, in the rush to try adrenalin-pumping sports while on holiday, the firm revealed that many Britons could be putting themselves at risk. Just over a third of respondents were found to not take the time to check their travel insurance policy before attempting a dangerous activity, while 15 per cent claim they would still do something even if they knew they would not be protected by their premium. It was indicated that 2.8 million consumers who have attempted an adventurous pursuit have hurt themselves. Meanwhile, ten per cent wrongly believe that all travel insurance policies provide cover for adventurous activities as standard, something - the firm stated - that could see them landed with a “hefty bill” should they have an accident.

For those consumers who discover that they have an inadequate travel insurance policy, they may be required to dip into their own pockets to meet the cost of medical treatment. This may have an impact upon their ability to manage other demands on their spending - such as loan repayments, utility bills and credit cards - upon their return to Britain.

Mike Pickard, head of travel insurance at esure, said: “Brits want more from their holidays nowadays and appear to be swapping the sun lounger for the bungee cord. It’s not where they’ve been on holiday but what they’ve done that seems to be important. With a surge in the popularity of - and access to - more adventurous sports and activities at holiday resorts across the globe, it’s crucial for holidaymakers to take out travel insurance and check they’re covered before they try out the likes of white water rafting in Australia or shark-feeding in the Bahamas. Get injured and the medical bills could turn a paradise trip into a nightmare.”

For those Britons looking for an effective way in which to finance the break of a lifetime, taking out a personal loan may be advisable. In getting a low rate loan, consumers may be able to meet various costs related to a holiday - such as travel and accommodation - quickly and affordably. The monetary assistance a loan provides could also help borrowers take out a comprehensive insurance policy before they consider activities such as canoeing or off-road biking. Getting help with money to fund a holiday could also be recommended after a recent FairFX study indicated that more than half of tourists are looking to cut back on spending for a vacation during the next 12 months. This was partially attributed to recent rises in the cost of living.
